Abstract:
The design of a novel balanced-fed aperture-coupled patch antenna for millimeter-wave applications is discussed. This completely planar antenna has a balanced feed which electromagnetically couples to a patch through two separate slots. These coupling slots are made resonant in the band of operation to increase the bandwidth and are positioned such that the surface-wave excitation is reduced. A reflector element is placed at the back of the antenna to ensure a good front-to-back ratio. The antenna can be manufactured in standard printed circuit-board (PCB) technology and can be used in an array configuration. The antenna shows good performance in both bandwidth and radiation efficiency. The resulting design has a bandwidth of more than 10% and a radiation efficiency larger than 80%. Measurements are in good agreement with simulations.
