Abstract:
The Butler matrix is a beam forming matrix that is used for electronically scanning of array antennas. High Power applications require the Butler matrix to be implemented from a waveguide construction for its advantage as a very low loss network.
We report a design of wideband waveguide components that compose the Butler matrix, hybrid 3dB and differential phase shifters, and a network assembly with almost ideal performance over a wider bandwidth than previous published for waveguide Butler matrices.
The waveguide components that compose the matrix are bandwidth limited and their joint assembly to a corporate network farther decreases the bandwidth due to their mutual inter reflections. We report a network shape that yields the best results of a wideband waveguide Butler matrix.
