Miniaturized electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) structures suitable for hand-held devices at the global positioning system (GPS) and 2.4 GHz industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) bands are presented. To minimize the size of the structures, the EBGs are designed on a ceramic substrate with relative permittivity of 82. The period of the structures is of the order of 2.6-3.5 mm. Simulation results are presented for spiral, slotted-patch and dual-fork EBGs. First prototypes for the spiral EBGs at the 2.4 GHz ISM band have been manufactured to calibrate the manufacturing process. Due to a slight misalignment of the metallizations, the center frequency and the shape of the stop band are affected. Measured data validates the concept of proposed EBGs, however, the number of elements needs to be increased.
