Abstract:
This paper summarizes an ongoing research effort to investigate the electromagnetic interference (EMI) threat posed by a wireless network inside a passenger aircraft. The present work focuses specifically on the development of a representative aircraft electromagnetic (EM) model for EMI analysis. An EM model of the Airbus A319 aircraft was developed using CST MICROWAVE STUDIO®. The model was validated using analytical techniques as well as existing experimental data in order to verify that the model is representative of the actual aircraft internal EM environment at 800 MHz, which corresponds to the GSM 800 frequency band for cellular communication. The validated EM model in turn offers a means of examining a variety of radiated coupling paths, as well as the effects of multiple transmitters for various types of network and aircraft configurations. The EMI threat posed by the wireless network will be determined by comparing the numerical results obtained from EM models of three electromagnetic compatibility coupling scenarios with susceptibility limits mandated by the civil aviation standard RTCA DO-160D.
