Abstract:
Light propagation within thin-film silicon solar cells is one of the key aspects in the development of highly efficient solar cells. It needs to be thoroughly understood to develop an effective light trapping scheme and ensure a low reflectivity. As the optical properties of thin-film solar cells are determined by the whole multi-layer system, where near field optics is relevant, we performed numerical simulations based on the Finite Integration Technique. It rigorously solves the integral form of the Maxwell equations in 3 dimensions and allows a spatial visualisation of the power loss profile. As a first approach light propagation is investigated in µc-Si:H solar cells with periodically textured grating couplers of ZnO. The gratings are defined by their period size and groove height. Variation of these parameters were performed with a focus on the red light that has to be trapped more effectively.
