Miniature open-ended coaxial probes for dielectric spectroscopy applications

In this paper we describe theoretical modelling and experimental
measurements of miniature coaxial probes with flat and conical end profiles, suitable for dielectric spectroscopy measurements on biological tissue samples. Various analytical solutions are compared with the results of simulations using CST Microwave for the sub-millimetre diameter probes operating over a range 500 MHz–40 GHz. Very good agreement was found between the theoretical and experimental data and it has been shown that analytical models for the infinite flanged coaxial probe case are applicable to small diameter flangeless probes, provided the outer conductor diameter is
about twice that of the dielectric bead in the coaxial transmission line. Data are presented for a range of sample media including reference liquids and liver tissue.
