  • In early 2000, the Internet of Things (IoT) was just a buzzword. Moving on, with the advances in digitalization and initiatives from the government the next big thing in Singapore is the SMART Nation. Despite the identifications of the five domain that will be built upon through IoT, it is simply the re-invention of existing devices into connected devices. The massive increase in the number of devices connected will give rise to numerous challenges – high integration of circuits and components, better energy efficiency and achieving a heterogeneous mix of wireless technologies. Hence the assembling and application of them to form a larger system has also coined another term – Interference of Things, “IoT”. As a result, signal integrity, power integrity and electromagnetic compatibility issues are inevitable. In order to rise and address the “IoT” challenge, adopting either a simulation driven approach or accurate test and measurement approach is insufficient. To make it better and faster, we need to harness both the marvels of simulation and measurement. For the keynote speech, an overview of challenges and solution to the SMART Nation will be presented. The costs and benefits of simulation and measurement will be discussed together with the approach to achieve a better design eco-system. This will then followed by some case studies to illustrate co-simulation-measurement or vice versa approach to address a problem before concluding the talk.

    Lin Biao Wang received his b. eng, m. sc and ph.d. degrees in electrical and electronic engineering from nanyang technological university (ntu), singapore. currently he is working in continental automotive singapore, as a high-speed and emc engineer. he specializes in high-speed design topics for memory and display interfaces. he is a technical expert of continental automotive in the field of “high-speed electronics simulation”. he also assumes an additional responsibility as the “location experts spokesperson”. in addition, he serves in ieee emc singapore chapter as a secretary. his research interests include signal integrity (si) / power integrity (pi) / electromagnetic interference (emi) modelling, measurement techniques for high-speed digital electronic circuits and emi reduction techniques.
