Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) can arise from a variety of natural or man-made electromagnetic sources. These sources may include Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP), High Intensity Radiated Fields (HIRF) from transmitters and radars and Lightning Strikes. Other concerns include the hazards of electromagnetic radiation (RADHAZ) to personnel (HERP), ordnance (HERO) and volatile materials (HERF). The vehicles of today have a large number of antennas installed for communications, guidance, radar and other telemetry. Co-site interference (EMI) is a major concern for Engineers integrating electronics onto a platform where “real estate” for antenna locations is very limited. Failure to consider EMI can result in at best, degradation of performance, at worst system failure. All of these threats can impact the operational capability of equipment, systems and vehicles.

Designing against E3 threats can be highly challenging. Full systems are:

  • Multi-scale: On large platforms, but containing small features.
  • Multi-physics: Involving static fields, transient waveforms and thermal issues.


Testing can be difficult or impractical, if even possible. This Workshop will show how advanced modeling and simulation tools, such as CST STUDIO SUITE®, can be used to help mitigate E3 threats. CST STUDIO SUITE has a configurable toolset that can be customized for various applications and the software can efficiently handle large, complex geometries and complex materials, all within an easy to use interface. CST has been involved in E3 design work for over 15 years and part of the simulation technology has been developed and optimized specifically for this application area.

This workshop offers an excellent opportunity to network with engineers and scientists working on Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3). Speakers from the aerospace, defense and other industries will present their experience in applying simulation to E3 design. CST will present both the current technology and newest developments in E3 simulation, together with relevant examples and workflows.
