Matching circuits are commonly used in mobile devices to control the antenna resonance frequencies. Instead of modifying the physical antenna structure, it is faster and easier to design matching circuits consisting of inductors, capacitors and transmission line segments to obtain the optimal impedance match. In addition, matching circuits can be easily adapted to last-minute design changes without changing the antenna structure. However, additional losses and tolerance problems may occur if the matching circuits are not designed carefully. It is important to maximize the energy transfer between the amplifier and the antenna, instead of trying to obtain the best possible impedance match. This can be obtained using a high qualify matching software which can also find the optimal matching circuit topology.

In this webinar we will present how the Optenni Lab matching circuit design software can be used to speed up the antenna design flow in conjunction with the CST® STUDIO SUITE® simulator. Optenni Lab is the leading professional matching circuit design software providing multiple optimized broadband, multiband and multi-antenna matching circuits using realistic component models, and recently has added support for tunable matching circuits. Impedance data from CST STUDIO SUITE simulations is easily passed to Optenni Lab and the optimized matching circuits can be returned to CST STUDIO SUITE for further analysis.

Enabled by recently released new features, CST STUDIO SUITE and Optenni Lab can be used to jointly optimize the electromagnetic structure and the matching circuits: within a CST STUDIO SUITE parameter sweep or optimization run, Optenni Lab can be called to automatically optimize matching circuits and to return the circuit data. This will greatly speed up the antenna design flow as traditionally the antenna would have to be re-matched after each geometry change. Using the new workflow the user can concentrate on getting the optimal bandwidth characteristics out of the antenna while the impedance matching is handled automatically by Optenni Lab.
