Cloud computing

Dedicated HPC hardware is a major investment for any organization. Hardware capital expenditure cost is just the starting point as operating expenses such as depreciation, housing, power and cooling must also be considered. Matching these expenditures to a growing company requirement is also a challenge – invest too much and some hardware will sit idle. Too little, and jobs will queue or will not run causing design and production delays.

Start-ups and SMBs may wish to consider secure HPC cloud computing as a solution. All simulations can run on cloud, on-demand, requiring little local IT infrastructure. Cost is fully op-ex based with no capital investment required. Cloud HPC is able to scale out to the largest job requirements with no queueing.

For the larger enterprise, cloud HPC can also be beneficial. On-premise HPC is typically not cutting edge and users can often face capacity restrictions and queues. For the largest problems, “bursting” to the cloud or working in a hybrid on-premise/cloud manner can be a cost-effective and productive solution for both end users and HPC management.

CST works with a number of public cloud providers and cloud hosting partners to provide easy to use solutions. CST STUDIO SUITE® is installed and configured with these providers and can be run in batch mode or via remote desktop where the GUI can be accessed as if working locally. Results can also be viewed on cloud or data can be pulled down locally as required. Strong end-to-end encryption ensures data security.

Cloud computing offers multiple HPC architectures (CPU, GPU, MPI etc) allowing the user to select the best one for the preferred solver. For example, time-domain can strongly benefit from multi-GPU and frequency-domain from multi-core CPU with MPI.
