Complete Design of Complex Multiplexers

Modern communication systems such as 5G or satellite payloads require high data rate transmission. To achieve this, large bandwidths, high power levels and an increasing number of channels are required. Multiplexers are a key part of such systems allowing for the combination of a large number of frequency channels into a common path (or, on the contrary, to separate the carriers into different physical channels). In general, the design of multiplexers is a complex task especially when many adjacent channels have to be implemented.

In this eSeminar we will review the current technology available within CST Studio Suite® regarding the design of multiplexers (and filters), focusing on how the complete design of complex multiplexers is achieved by combining several existing tools and solvers. We will explain how tools such as FD3D, FEST3D and the CST Studio Suite frequency domain solver can be used to perform the full electrical design of waveguide diplexers/multiplexers. Finally, we will show the multiphysics simulation capabilities within CST Studio Suite in the context of multiplexer design, such as high-power RF breakdown (through SPARK3D and the CST Studio Suite particle studio solver) and thermal and mechanical stress (CST Studio Suite multiphysics solver).

  • Dr. Carlos Vicente currently serves as Senior Technical Sales Manager for Aurorasat, part of SIMULIA, a Dassault Systémes brand. Dr. Vicente received his Ph.D. in telecommunications engineering in 2005 from the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany. In his doctoral thesis, Dr. Vicente researched high power effects in communications satellites such as RF breakdown and passive intermodulation. In 2006, he co-founded the company Aurora Software and Testing S. L. (Aurorasat).
